Core Web Vitals for Business Websites: What Actually Matters
Page speed affects rankings and conversions. A plain-language guide to LCP, INP, and CLS — and the fixes that move them most.
Google's Core Web Vitals measure how fast, responsive, and stable your pages feel. They influence search rankings — and, more importantly, whether visitors stay.
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
LCP measures how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
- Serve images in WebP or AVIF at the right size.
- Preload the hero image and critical fonts.
- Use a CDN and server-side rendering for key pages.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)
INP measures how quickly the page responds to clicks and taps. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
- Ship less JavaScript and split it by route.
- Defer third-party scripts such as chat widgets and tags.
- Avoid long tasks on the main thread.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)
CLS measures unexpected movement while the page loads. Aim for under 0.1.
- Set width and height on images and embeds.
- Reserve space for banners and ads.
- Use font-display strategies that avoid large reflows.
Where to start
Measure with real-user data in Google Search Console, fix the pages with the most traffic first, and re-test after each change. Modern frameworks like Next.js make many of these optimisations the default.
